Statement on EARN IT Act Passage Out of Committee

Internet Works Statement on the Passage of the EARN IT Act Out of Senate Judiciary Committee

Internet Works and its member companies and organizations abhor child sexual abuse material (CSAM), and its elimination is a top priority for our platforms.

Eroding Section 230, however, is not the way to eliminate CSAM, which is already illegal and unprotected content. Section 230 enables our platforms to take quick, decisive action to remove CSAM and any content violating our platforms’ guidelines. Our diverse cross-section of online companies and stakeholders demonstrate that the flexibility built into Section 230 is especially critical to mid-tier and smaller platforms’ ability to fight bad actors, including those who spread CSAM online. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to content moderation because of the diverse platforms, content and users that exist in the online ecosystem.

We look forward to working with Senators Blumenthal and Graham, members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and Congress to keep users safe and to help victims realize justice, while ensuring Section 230 remains an available tool in these efforts.
